The Annual Southwest Georgia Regional Art Exhibition provides a platform for local and regional artists support their own artistic endeavors by promoting and preserving the culture of the arts in Albany and the region. Annually, it gives stage to talented local artists, offering them the opportunity to show their work in a juried public forum while showcasing an expansive regional collection to the community.
The Albany Area Arts Council's 19th Annual Southwest Georgia Regional Fine Art Exhibition and Sale featured 63 artists and 123 works of art; the majority of the artists were residents of the southwestern quadrant of Georgia, but there were also entrants from Florida and Alabama.
Juried categories included painting / drawing, photography / digital art, and sculpture / ceramics. Prizes were awarded for first, second, and third place winners as well as an honorable mention in each of the three categories along with one award for Best in Show. The juror for this exhibition was Julie Bowland. The 2019 Awards List can be downloaded here.
Julie Bowland is a Valdosta, Georgia based artist who teaches art and directs the Dedo Maranville Fine Arts Gallery at Valdosta State University. Formerly a Tallahassee resident, she has a BFA in Painting from Florida State University and an MFA from Arizona State University.
Bowland's work is included in private, public and corporate collections, including the Museum of Arts and Sciences in Daytona Beach; the City of Tallahassee Permanent Collection; Barnett Bank in Jacksonville; First South Bank in Tallahassee and Florida State College at Jacksonville. Her work was featured in a solo exhibition at the Buchanan Museum of Fine Arts in Buchanan, Michigan, and she recently exhibited at the Kobro Gallery, Strzeminski Academy of Fine Arts, Lodz, Poland. Her work is represented by the Venvi Gallery in Tallahassee, Florida. In the recent years, Bowland has presented Plein Air painting workshops to high school students, college students and adult artists in Florida, Georgia and Utah.
